In Art, students receive two grades: participation and conduct. By no means is your student graded on artistic talent. I want my students to experience art and try something new, while learning needed art and life skills in the process!
Each unit is based on the appropriate grade-level Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) that your student should master in Art. A unit may span a number of rotations and can take each class a month or more to complete. Every unit will include art history, planning/rough draft stage, ample production/work time, and critique/discussion time. A student’s participation is therefore assessed based on completion of each unit and engagement during a class period. Did your student finish the project? Did he/she use their time wisely and put forth their best effort during class throughout the unit?
The Art AKS can be found on the Gwinnett County Public Schools website (www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us) on the “AKS/Curriculum” page or by clicking the AKS button above. Please see the Current Projects & EQs page to learn about what your student is working on in art class!
Your student will earn one of the grades below for Participation in Art Class:
Excellent (E) – student puts forth effort and completes unit all/most of the time
Satisfactory (S) - student puts forth effort and completes unit sometimes/less than half
Needs Improvement (N) - student chooses not to put forth effort during class some of the time
Unsatisfactory (U) - student chooses not to put forth effort during class at all
Art Room Guidelines:
· We are Respectful
· We are Responsible
· We work together
· We try our Best
· We have fun together!
For conduct, your student is assessed on his/her behavior during Art Class. The student’s ability to follow the art room guidelines, directions, need for prompts or redirection, as well as his/her attitude are all incorporated into the conduct grade. Should a disruptive behavior occur, all students are given verbal reminders first. If the behavior continues, students are placed in time out. After time out, if the disruptive behavior continues, the student will sign the Behavior Book. Major infractions, such as harming another student or purposefully damaging materials, will result in an automatic Behavior Book signing.
For daily misconduct, students can receive one (1) strike each time they attend a Special Area class. One strike can be given for minor behavior infractions. Needing multiple prompts or sitting in time out would be situations that one (1) strike could be given.
If a student accumulates three (3) strikes within a 9-week grading period, or has signed the Behavior Book one time, the conduct grade can be lowered from an (E) to an (S). Five (5) strikes within a 9-week grading period, or multiple signings of the Behavior Book, could result in a conduct grade of an (N).
Your student will earn one of the grades below for Conduct in Art Class:
Excellent (E) – Student participates in class, follows directions, and has not needed behavioral prompts from the teacher.
Satisfactory (S) – Student participates in class, follows directions, and needs only a few behavioral prompts. Student may have made behavior choices that prompted time out or received multiple verbal reminders that resulted in three (3) daily strikes.
Needs Improvement (N) – Student occasionally chooses not to participate, follow directions and/or contribute to class, even when prompted. Student may have received five (5) or more daily strikes.
Unsatisfactory (U) - student does not participate, follow directions, and/or contribute to class, even when reminded or redirected to do so; student repeatedly makes poor behavior choices that result in consequences, such as signing the Behavior Notebook, sitting out from group activities, or alternative assignments.
